I gotta admit, when I finished reading "Lovers Under the Blue Moon," I was saddened cause I was sure that was the end of the Kaldor saga as we knew it. So when I saw this book come out a short time later, I was so excited I almost bought it before reading the premise first. But read it I did and I was intrigued. I just finished reading "Demon's Fire, Merman's Storm," which took less than a week to read. That and the five stars I gave this book should tell you what I thought about this latest Kaldorian entry.

Without giving too much away, the story takes place about 22 years after the events of the last book, so the saga nows shifts to the next generation of Xeetahn royals, starting with "baby" Cain, the oldest of Lucien and Gabriel's children. Of course, he's not a baby anymore, so he's now refered to as Cain, with the uncle he's named for being refered to as Uncle Cain, Prince Cain, or older Cain.

Cain is proving to be a strong Xeetahn warrior, just as good as or better than some, despite not having wings likes his siblings or cousins. Of course, Cain isn't without any abilities besides his warrior skills and fire magic from his Destyan Lucien, as he's also inherited his Kazyan Gabriel's healing magic. Still, Cain can't help but feeling left out due to his lack of wings, so Gabriel "suggests" his son visit Earth to take a break and clear his head. While there, Cain finds himself inexplicably drawn to a boat out in the middle of the ocean, where he rescues, and falls in love with, an injured Astred, the "merman" of the book's title, who has a problem similar to Cain's situation, and powers forces of evil would literally kill to posess.

Really, if I had one thing to critique this book on, and I'm only just nitpicking at this point, it's that it seemed to me that Cain and Astred fell in love way too fast, literally within minutes. That's it. other than that, it was a perfect mix of action, magic, romance, and everything else in between, yet it never once threatened to be overwhelming or confusing. Still, I would recommend that those who've never read the series start at the very first book, or there may be points of this book that you'll be scratching your head over.
The children of the rulers of Xeetha and Alaria are maturing into adults and beginning to spread their wings, literally and figuratively. Though many of the Xeethan's bonded with other races, each of their children gained wings except for Cain, son of Princes Lucien and Gabriel. This lack is the only sore point for Cain who quietly, desperately prays for his wings to develop.

Meanwhile, back on Earth another young man is also wishing for his body to complete its transformation. In the depths of the ocean hidden by magic a young merman is saddened that his tail has yet to split into legs so that he can walk on land. Astred is tired of his overprotective, loving family stopping him from exploring the world above because of his so-called handicap.

Left behind once again Astred takes matters into his own hands when his family goes missing. He doesn't realize that his actions will have far reaching consequences for everyone in the paranormal community when he rescues his loved ones and meets his future in a wingless princeling named Cain. The lovers will face untold danger and the possibility of death before they can truly bond and proclaim themselves mates.

Secrets, lies, and past grievances come to a dramatic conclusion in Demon's Fire, Merman's Storm. A tumultuous tale of jealousy, guilt, and redemption is neatly tied together in this suspenseful and exciting romance. Fans of this series will love it! New readers however need to start with the first book to truly enjoy and understand all the action. Characters from each book make an appearance and add their own twists and turns to this enchanting love story. Cain and Astred begin as misfits who ultimately prove their worth in so many ways. Demon's Fire, Merman's Storm is a satisfying, character driven tale that answers all the questions and leaves the reader thirsting for more.
